Microsoft Softgrid application virtualization is an awesome option for larger organizations with mutiple applications that need to be run on the same pc/server, that have conflicts with other programs or use mutiple programs for a limited time and don’t want to install an application on each pc if it is used just once in a while. With Softgrid, applications are not installed on the pc, but on a application server streaming with RTSP to the desktop. This allows pc desktop/laptop images to keep clean and you won’t have to purchase 500 licenses of Office, but possibly 250 if only 250 are using the program at the same time (this is something for you to review with Microsoft). How to install and enable the Windows Server Hyper-V CTP in Windows Server 2008 RC
Hyper-V is a virtualization technology built into Windows Server 2008.
Key Hyper-V features include (this is quoted from Microsoft’s Hyper-V Website):
| • | New and improved architecture: New 64-bit micro-kernelized hypervisor architecture enables Hyper-V to provide a broad array of device support methods and improved performance and security. |
| • | Broad OS support: Broad support for simultaneously running different types of operating systems, including 32-bit and 64-bit systems across different server platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and others. |
| • | SMP support: Ability to support up to 4 multiple processors (SMP) in a virtual machine environment to enable you to take full advantage of multi-threaded applications in a virtual machine. |
| • | Memory support: Support for large memory allocation per virtual machine enables you to now virtualize most workloads, making Hyper-V an ideal platform for both enterprises and small to medium businesses alike. |
| • | Improved storage access: With pass-through disk access and broad support for SAN and internal disk access, Hyper-V provides greater flexibility in configuring and utilizing storage environments optimally. |
